Common questions

What does this actually show?
How much land the entire world's population would occupy if everyone lived at the population density of one chosen country. It divides the world population by that country's people per square kilometer and draws the resulting area to scale on the globe.
Why is the difference between countries so large?
Because population densities span several orders of magnitude. At Mongolia's density humanity would need more land than the planet has; at Singapore's it would fit inside a small fraction of one country. The comparison is deliberately naive: it ignores whether the land in question is habitable.
